These images show the preliminary design of a sauna that is currently under construction in Bondurant, WY. Intended as a destination on a 20 acre property, the sauna is sited among a mixed forest of aspen and lodgepole pines. The sauna overlooks a seasonal stream and the Gros Ventre Range, offering perspectives that do not exist at the home on the property. The structure and cladding of the sauna is made from site-milled standing dead trees that were killed when the Roosevelt Fire burned over the property in 2018.
The building offers a series of unique spatial experiences. To access the building, visitors step up to an elevated platform that is screened from the surrounding trees. Inside the entry door is an intimate, dimly lit, vaulted changing room. The traditional sauna adheres to löyly principles and features a single, round, north-facing aperture that provides soft, diffuse light and a view.
