The site for this contemporary Carbondale, Colorado home (2021) is on an arid sage brush plateau and punctuated by a rocky cliff band that runs through the middle of the property. The building engages this feature– and the views to Mount Sopris and the Roaring Fork Valley beyond– by projecting over it with an elevated deck and outdoor living space. The rock band serves as a barrier between the natural landscape below and the unnatural intervention. The house consists of two low-profile forms that mimic the slope of the topography, minimizing their visual impact on the exposed terrain.
