Early this summer my parents and I found ourselves in Dallas, Texas at the same time. In between a smattering of events and obligations, we managed to carve out the better part of a day to visit some notable museums. The Nasher Sculpture Center, Kimbell Art Museum, and Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art were all on the docket.
It was a perfect day for the Nasher with strong winds and a scattering of clouds. In passing moments between cloud cover, the thousands of oculi that make up the translucent ceiling would dapple the walls, ceiling, and sculptures. Unlike so many other museums, the Nasher does not insulate itself from the days dynamic lighting.
Next, we drove over to Forth Worth, first to visit the Kimbell Art Museum. My father immediately stumbled upon his favorite painting, the first known painting by Michelangelo Buonarroti, The Torment of Saint Anthony. I continued on while he filled his sketchbook with doodles and studies of the “peculiar” anatomy of some of the demonic figures. If you know, then you know. We spent some time on the lawn, had lunch in the cafe, and decided we might as well see the exhibit in the Extension of the Kimbell Art Museum. On display was an alleged sliver of the original Christian cross.
We ended our circuit with the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. We were greeted with “Vortex” by Richard Serra before entering the museum. Stomping a loose paver in the center of the sculpture sent echoing booms through the tower and kept us enamored for longer than we would like to admit. At this point we were too short on time to do justice to the collection the museum has to offer, we opted to split up and meet back at the car and review each others’ sketches on the drive back to Dallas.
