Virginia Cabin: Progress Update I
April 25th, 2025 | LN | Construction Progress
Clifton Forge, VA is a town we know well. From 2011-2012 we worked on the Masonic Amphitheater in Clifton Forge as a part of design/buildLAB. Now we are working on an international, cross-country collaboration with onSITE architecture in our old stomping grounds. Modest in scale, budget, and material, this cabin sits on the edge of a clearing along a ridge overlooking Appalachian Mountain views.
The building consists of two simple Corten steel volumes and a covered deck or belvédère, under a single shed roof. On the east side of the belvedere is the “bat cave”– a workshop and toy storage. The west side consists of the habitable program: séjour (living/cooking) and a connected hearth room, a crash pad, bunk room, work nook, rain room and WC. The volume and openings in each room is carefully scaled to suit the function of each space.
